This trailer actually dropped the other day, but every time I went to watch it there would be an error with the video loading. But hey, through a little something called perseverance, I finally got to see it.

What a charming little trailer. I dig this so much. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star in La La Land, a film about a jazz singer (Gosling) and an aspiring actress (Stone) who fall in love. The minute and a half trailer contains no dialogue, just who I assume to be Gosling singing (did we already know he could sing?) over various scenes of the movie. From what I could tell from just those few glimpses, it’s a whimsical film, full of the bright neon lights of Hollywood and a nostalgic sentimentality to it that will no doubt be part of its charm. The film is also a musical. Correct me if I’m wrong, but have we had a musical lately? None come to mind immediately, but this one seems like it will be a good return for musicals.
This will be Gosling and Stone’s third collaboration. Their last one, Gangster Squad, wasn’t the greatest film, but Crazy, Stupid, Love was a neat rom-com, and their chemistry was apparent throughout. It will be good to seem them back as costars in what is shaping up to be one of the films I’m most looking forward to during the winter film releases.
La La Land is written and directed by Damien Chazelle, who was responsible for 2014’s Oscar winning Whiplash, a film I admittedly haven’t seen yet. Regardless, I’ve only heard good things about it, which means great things for La La Land. La La Land hits theaters in December. I will certainly be in the theaters for this. Maybe I’ll see you there.
Katey is a writer and film and television critic. She maintains Mad Max: Fury Road is the best movie of the past decade, and definitely deserved Best Picture at the Oscars. Follow her on Twitter, where her Twitter bio says she live tweets her progress of “The X-Files,” but that hasn’t actually happened in a really long time. Follow her anyway. It’ll be a laugh, probably.
