On October 21st, multi-talented, multi-genre, multi-synth collective KRON – comprised of Michael Sherer, Sean Krell, and Sam Newell – introduced the KRON EP to the world. A perfected blend of electronic instrumentals cascades out of the speakers as you enjoy the four track piece, but that’s not all they’ve had in store for patiently-awaiting fans. They have integrated audio and visual technology to further enjoy the music, sending out virtual reality glasses with every album purchase to complement it.
We’ve got the exclusive premiere of their virtual reality video for “Total Space Jam”, and you can enjoy it with or without the glasses. (But we suggest nabbing the EP and getting your hands on some.)
What’s your official origin story?
Entry 01 – Samuel Newell – Light Wave Jockey
Roughly 3 years ago, I moved to LA from New Mexico where I had been riding light waves and melting faces for a couple years. Armed with my LZX, I took the leap. I am friends with this guy Johnny Woods, he was throwing this video party called Ghosting at some guys warehouse in China Town, he said “you gotta meet this Sean Krell guy, he’s got a serious rig and wants some viz” — now look, I don’t have the RAM to deal with normies on laptops, so when he said this guy Sean has an out of this world ship, I was skeptical.
Entry 02 – Sean Krell – Ace Sonic Pilot
I show up, vid heads everywhere, people you don’t see in the light or maybe you don’t want to, people on synthehol, nuke…you know the whole 00001001. I make my way to the back of the place to this room, it’s glowing all purple all blue and there are some real baffled looking nerds spilling out of it. I figure this must be the place, and sure enough, I peek my feelers in and there is this guy surrounded by gear – I mean – its a mothership class operation. In the middle of it all is this slick guy, he obviously knows how to fly the thing because he’s spinning around giving demos, all geeked out like he’s got 8 arms. Anyway, I come in and all the noobs start to log out of the room, he comes back down to ground level and says “oh you’re Sam, the guy with the viz hardware?” yeah, and I got the cortex to use it.
Fast forward, Sean and I have been jamming for awhile and we got our systems linked up, cruising. Something is missing though, we got this ship flying all over the place but we can’t break out of this damn system. Stuck. Sean is all linked into the scene out here so he says he knows a guy.
Entry 03 – Michael Sherer – Interdimensional Ice Witch
In walks this mysterious quiet guy – calls himself Sonic Waves Chaos Portal with a hood over his head (he never takes the hood off) and a bag of who-knows-what around his shoulder, clutching an RS7000. He doesn’t say a whole lot but he says he’s got some material from the depths of Myrddin Wyllt to show us. Man I didn’t know what I was in for….by material, he meant he had an entire separate universe in this tome of an RS7000. I mean, this guy is the real deal, he comes into the mothership, patches in, and opens this thing up like the Codex Giga. The room gets really cold and all these ice demons, cyber geists, and funky smoke start pouring out. Sean and I had not flown in this territory before but needless to say, we were in, and it was on – this is another level.
Entry 04 – KRON – Interdimensional Gateway Vessel (entity)
After a pretty short period of time we built KRON up into a pretty serious vessel and we were cruising. We had our first encounter at a following Ghosting where we opened up full throttle and totally blitzed the place. We were ready to leave the Milky Way.
What sort of cohesion, or togetherness, was already there when KRONformed, and how has it evolved through live shows, and recent EP recordings?
Well, like I said in the origin story, we met up to shred, we met up to make KRON. We have become pretty tight, we practically live in the KRON ship, it smells weird.
Where do you draw your inspiration from, to create something like the KRON EP?
We have our own universe, the KRON EP is an audio and visual experience. We are 3 operators with very different inspirations that make KRON wild as space junk. KRON is a funky blend of gear lust, cyber fantasy, ancient synth wizardry, italian horror special fx, sewer cruising, anime explosions, video game speed runs and youtube trash.
You self-identify your genre as ‘Mortal Kombat-Safari House-Horror Synth’. . .sounds dangerous. Is that what you tell prospective venues? How did you land on that categorization?
‘Mortal Kombat-Safari House-Horror Synth’ is a verbatim name for our style. Yeah, we’ve been using that – it freaks normies out though. I don’t know what they want to hear, ‘live techno’, hahaha jeez. You know, KRON isn’t into making pastiche music, we aren’t sentimental. We make futuristic floor punching dance music…lately we’ve been saying ‘dark dance’ that seems to sum it up nice.
As a sentient, rogue Microsoft screen saver myself, I can appreciate the emphasis on face-melting visuals- how did the idea of introducing live visuals at your performances come to be?
Oh really, a rogue Micro$oft screen saver, around here? Nice to meet you, I take it your name is Sam as well then? The visuals were original to KRON, I’m a light wave jockey, a wizard. I play the LZX Video Synthesizer like you would play any other instrument, it’s wild as hell – sometimes I don’t even know whats going on. People get it when they see us at an encounter, the viz really gives KRON a morphing shimmering skin. The projections and the lasers are a part of the music they are a part of the KRON universe. We play live and face the screen because thats the encounter thats going on – who does that?
What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you all during a live show, so far?
Our album release party got busted by undercovers and we didn’t even get to go on. That sucked we had it all set up with VR and lasers. That was a mess, rotten from the top down. I don’t even want to talk about it.
Is there a favorite track any of you have off the KRON EP?
I like “Total Space Jam”, I’m sure everyone has their own flavor.
What’s in the pipeline for 2017?
We are already got the framework laid for our second album. We are exploring new dimensions right now. We just entered RIMWORLD recently, really naz-t stuff. I think we want to get vocals on some tracks but finding the right cyborg is really tough stuff.
I get a very strong, part Big Trouble in Little China, Kurt Russell, part Fifth Element vibe from KRON’s work- do you take that as a compliment?
Yes, without a doubt. If fact you could even do this:
Big Trouble Little China- Mike.
Kurt Russell(Captain Ron) – Sam.
Fifth Element – Sean.
Anything else you’d like our readers to know?
Order the EP! We are stuck in RIMWORLD right now and need holo-goo to get out because Mike ate it all one night.
KRON is available now.
