I don’t care who you are, what stage you might be at in your life, or how you feel about Olympian Michael Phelps. Not to make anything sound half-assed or rude, but I also don’t care that this is technically an ad. Everyone everywhere should see this video.
Why? Why should you take time to watch an ad made by a wealthy corporation, starring one of the most well-known athletes in the entire world?
Because it’s crucial to your self confidence. You need to see the physical and emotional pain that is necessary to achieving your dreams. You already see Michael’s moments of triumph – and, sometimes, his moments of “failure” (*cough*weed*cough*) – but the general population doesn’t see the small moments in the dead of night when he’s hustling and hurting to bring his best to the spotlight.
This video is for everyone who thinks they aren’t capable of being great. This video is for people who have been stepped on, bruised, and discouraged in their dreams. It’s for people struggling with debilitating disease, heartbreak, and sickness you may not necessarily see. People with depression, anxiety, and who have been exposed to or ridden with additional health problems that carry stigma and are not necessarily “kosher” to discuss with people. Everyone has their own uphill battle to fight – even those who seem more blessed than others – and everyone deserves to see that hard work can get them to places they may have only ever dreamt of before.
This video will make you feel alive, empowered, and connected to the world around you. Take time to appreciate it for the inspiring work that it is. And then let it be your guide to living a life worth smiling about.
Because everyone deserves their one shining moment.

Meredith has spent her life pin balling across America. She is often referred to as an entrepreneur, photographer, writer, and multi-media maven. She would label herself “butcher,” “baker,” and “candlestick maker.” (Hint: One of these is not true.) She is currently trying to wrap her head around the fact that her kitten Schmidt is turning her into a cat lady. You can find her random musings on Twitter and Instagram.
