SOPHIE is one of the most elusive electronic artists that I know anything about. Based out of London, this guy has only been around a few years. I’ve heard he hand picks his show venues, choosing exclusive and random places to perform around the world. Recently he did a few shows with Flume, which would have been insane to witness.
If you’ve heard any of his songs, it’s probably “LEMONADE.” Known for his ultimately strange style of music, SOPHIE is not something that can be easily explained. He uses bubbly and oddly creepy sound bites within and without his songs. Bits and pieces are reminiscent of standard pop songs or even some sort of K-Pop – take the “VYZEE” or chorus of “LEMONADE,” for example – but the rest of it is more . . . complicated.
Which leads me into my Challenge for you, dear readers. Can you get through it all?
Let’s start here.
- Put in your headphones and TURN UP THE SOUND.
- Click this link. Don’t be afraid. It’s just SOPHIE’s website.
- Scroll all the way down.
Did you do it? Still with me?
OK, that’s child’s play. Let’s get a little more into it. Try to listen to this ENTIRE song. I doubt you can do it. I’ve only done it once, and I’ll do it never again. Probably.
And? Are you still here?
One more step to this Challenge, friends. Watch “LEMONADE” in fan-made music video form. (One word of caution: it is pretty disturbing. The “inappropriate for some users” box isn’t lying.)
But this last step of my Challenge isn’t just to watch the video. Or even to watch the “HARD” video afterward (which is even more intense, yet somehow more straightforward, than this one). I want you to come up with a reason for the video – what’s the story here? What about the message? Why did the Count the Clock people use this song in particular to tell this story?
Can you get past the easy “SHARE THIS NOW” aspect? Don’t just show your friends a wild and crazy video – talk about it with them.
Most of all though, why does SOPHIE use slides for all his music artwork? (No really, I don’t have an answer for this one.)
So I ask you, what do you think of SOPHIE and his music? Let us know @theMoshery!
